Prime Small Screen Selections: 7 Can't-Miss Movies This Coming Week

Top Selection

The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring critique addresses the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore presents an inspired performance playing Elisabeth, an aging actress forced into presenting an aerobics show on television. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and horrifying process called this experimental method. This generates a younger clone called Sue, resulting in a progressively vampiric relationship between the two. October 17th, Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful mystery features Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a break from writing about world issues to board a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her husband, and other affluent guests. However when a mysterious woman disappears from the ship during the evening and all passengers denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Available now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director pushes his creative boundaries through this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage fully commits to his cult stardom in this autobiographical spoof. He acts as an egotistical film star named Nicolas Cage who accepts a million-dollar gig to appear at a festive event in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the alleged criminal, the actor's unconventional method is put to the test. October 11th, prime time, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has rendered the children frightened. Once Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. Yet the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4

Black Bag

The current week's second offering by the same director is a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks worn by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked to identify a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging psychological game of fact versus fiction develops. Additional actors take part the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
