The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
